THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Football League is the world's oldest League competition for soccer clubs. Each club plays each other twice a season, home and away. There are three divisions of the League. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw. 'Goal difference' followed by 'goal for' is used to separate clubs level on points, though other methods have been used in the past.

In 1992, the clubs in the top division resigned from the Football League to form the F.A. Premier League, also known as the Premiership. Three clubs are now promoted from the Football League to the Premiership each season. The bottom club of the Third Division is replaced by the champion of the Nationwide Conference (if that club's ground meets the Football League's requirements).
